about

From odes to outlaws and pirate rockers, to a chorus that summons a savior to the dance floor, the Jim Dyar Band returns with its newest release, “Rembrandts on Red Walls” -- an album that definitely paints and rides well outside the lines. The 11-song release also covers such topics as stealing away love, the emerging awareness of failed systems, and the struggle for sanity amid personal loss and economic depression.

Along with eight new tunes by Dyar, “Rembrandts” also features fresh material by band members Torri Pratt and Tracy Manuel, and a swampy traditional tune sung and arranged by Morgan Hannaford. Keyboardist Rick Larsen is also among the band’s current lineup.

The release follows the far Northern California band’s 2008 debut “Magical Land,” and the Muletown String Band’s eclectic 2011 self-titled album “Muletown.” Dyar, Pratt, Hannaford and Manuel all performed with and wrote songs for Muletown. The album also marks the third collaboration with producer/engineer Bruce Turgon (Foreigner/Lou Gramm) and his After Hours Recorders studio.

The album title, “Rembrandts on Red Walls,” is a line from the new song “Waltz for Elzy Lay,” which chronicles Dyar’s outlaw ancestor who rode alongside legendary bandit Butch Cassidy. “They would escape to a place called Robber’s Roost in the red rock canyons of Utah,” says Dyar of the outlaws. “They had to have seen the petroglyphs, or what I’m calling Rembrandts on Red Walls. I've been there and the place inspires me.”
